IDEA Services supports people with intellectual disabilities to enjoy great lives as part of their communities. If you are looking for a job where you can build a long-term career and where no two days are the same, this is the job for you!
We are looking for a Support Worker to join a culturally based facility in Orewa, supporting five Korean gentlemen that are living together. To support the needs of these gentlemen we are looking for someone with knowledge and respect for the Korean culture. We require a Korean speaker who will be able to communicate well with them and their families.
The gentlemen are very energetic and active. They enjoy going out for activities and getting involved in the community. You will need to be active and able to support them to attend community based activities.
You will be supporting individuals with complex behavioural needs to lead safe and meaningful lives in the community. We are looking for resilient people, with calm natures and confidence to deal with challenging behaviours. You will need the ability to deal with the unexpected on a daily basis. Your role will be to support them in gaining independence so that they can make their own choices, be part of their community, and live a fulfilling life.
What does the job involve?
- As a support worker you will support them to attend different activities daily in the community.
- You will be supporting people to grow their independence and learn skills for daily living (e.g. using public transport, getting a job, manage money, cook a meal).
- Supporting people with their emotional regulation skills - part of what you do each day will be helping them to recognise and respond to emotional overwhelm and react safely to this
- Being able to work on individual needs, supporting people with daily activities such as shopping, cleaning, showering and administering medication.
- Helping people with their interests and hobbies (e.g. going to the park or beach, participating in sport, doing art and crafts).
- Supporting them to plan and achieve their goals and make decisions and choices.
- Making sure they can connect with Korean community and be supported with families.
- Helping them stay healthy and make positive choices about their lifestyle.
